Hi folks,
Many of you have seen and signed the petition we have had published in the local newspapers for the past several weeks. Thank you for that. We have had a pretty good response from that. We have received right around 250 signatures as a result of those publications which is actually quite good when you consider the amount of effort involved in cutting it out, distributing to friends, and posting it.
It is time to kick this into high gear now. We have printed up 20 sets of the petition, allowing us something like 10,000 lines for signatures. It is our intention to distribute these to businesses in Crestline, Twin Peaks, Blue Jay, and Lake Arrowhead and beyond if we can. These businesses can collect the signatures and return the petitions to us. We will be looking for high traffic businesses whose owners support this cause.
We will also need to have this distributed at the Post Offices in person by volunteers. The Post Offices in these areas are the highest traffic locations we can think of and we feel that they will yield high numbers of signatures.
The petition is of great importance since Senator Dutton told me that it would be an essential element in getting him on board with our cause.
We are looking for suggestions of businesses which might be on board with this. We also need volunteers who can spend some time at the Post Offices and solicit signatures. It will be necessary for those who volunteer to have a discussion with us ahead of time to go over the specifics of the scope of our arguments so that the message is controlled and so that they are able to ask the inevitable questions from folks.
Depending on how many volunteers we can get, we will have either one on one introductions with them to communicate these bullet points, or, we may have a meeting or two where several people get together and we can present the facts of the matter to them.
If anyone has suggestions or would like to volunteer to manage the petition drive in your respective area, please contact me at stoptrafficlight@yahoo.com, or by phone. During the daytime on weekdays, I can be reached at 626-252-6366 or, on weekends and evenings at 909-338-3450.
If we can get these signatures, we can stop this madness!
Best regards, Aaron Creighton Stop Caltrans Now!

Actually, Mr. Biane and Mr. Derry have our sincerest Kudos for having written that letter. I am very pleased to see them getting involved on our behalf. I know that someone from CalTrans is meeting with Mr. Biane today to present the issue to him. I hope that he gives the opportunity to us to offer up the counter argument. Stop Caltrans Now has been digging pretty deaply into this issue and we have some pretty firm numbers that refute the basis Caltrans used to justify this, "Safety" project. We can shoot the premise down easily and the legalities don't fly either. I wonder if the Supervisors, or any other of our representatives will allow us to offer that counter arguemnet. I guess we shall see. But for now, I thank the Supervisors for doing the right thing.

I received a copy of a letter sent from our County Supervisors to Caltrans Director, Dr. Wolfe on Oct 29. I believe this was sent in a large part due to the comments of this thread. I can't figure out how to copy and paste it, but here is a retype. I apologize in advance for any typos I don't catch. ++++++++ Dear Dr. Wolfe,
Caltrans' plans to install a traffic signal at the junction of Lake Gregory Dr. and Highway 18 has produced considerable unrest in the mountain communities.
Caltrans failure to inlcude the community in the discussion about this intersection denied your agency the opportunity to communicate the reasoning and rationale behind the recommendation to install the signal. The public may or may not be swayed by the analysis presented. However, the integrity of the process and a feeling that the public was given a "fair shake" would have been protected.
We urge you to engage the public and take the opportunity to make the case for a signal and allow them to articulate their concerns and oppostion to this signal. Although such a decision on you part will delay the installation of the signal, the public is entitled to have a participatory role in their government and it would go a long way toward rehabilitating the image your agency currently suffers from within the community.
Please reconsider implementation of the contract and provide an avenue of dialgue for the people your serve.
Sincerely,
Paul Biane Neil Derry

The previous post was posted in another online forum, and I thought this might be a nice place to start that discussion.

Dr. Raymond Wolfe
District 8 Director
CalTrans
464 West 4th Street
San Bernardino, CA 92401
Dear Dr. Wolfe:
The Crestline community is always looking for new events that we can promote to bring tourists to our town and, hopefully, increase tourism revenues for our local businesses. This year, we would like to stage a large event, and I was told I should seek your advice regarding possible permits for this event. We are also sending this letter to the CHP as a request for direction in obtaining their buy in and permitting information in case it is necessary.
We are proposing to host a very large demolition derby sometime in mid-December, or possibly, in early January. We would like to make sure that as many people are involved in this as possible.
We have determined that the best location for this event would be at the intersection of State Highway 18 and Lake Gregory Drive. Of course, it would be necessary to block off the highway, so as to be able to hold this event, and, there would necessarily be the need for some tow trucks during and after the event. This is where your agency comes in.
We will need to have the CHP and CalTrans on hand to block the highway and redirect the traffic so that we can use the highway for approximately 4 hours. That time does not include clean up time afterward. For the clean up operations, we will need around 5 or 6 CalTrans tow trucks on hand. We anticipate that it should take about 8 hours in total for the event from start to end. Of course, we will need to also block off Lake Gregory Drive, but we will write a separate letter to the county and the Sheriff regarding that issue.
At any rate, I wonder if you would be so kind as to reply to this letter with your specific advice and approval. We will need to know who to contact with your recommendations regarding the actual permitting.
Please reply as soon as you can so that we can make this happen. It is very important to our community that this source of revenue not be overlooked. We have traditionally never had major events of this kind in the Winter, but, times being what they are, every single dollar counts as I am sure you are acutely aware. I understand that state agencies are currently trying every possible tactic to get funding from the Federal government so I just know you will understand.
Sincerely,
Aaron Creighton
